Louis Vuitton for beginners: The world of the SLG’s

Louis Vuitton Josephine Wallet in Monogram with Rose
Continuing with this mini series on my blog discussing all things Louis Vuitton and a beginners guide to purchasing your first item, I wanted to talk you through purchasing from their Small leather Goods collection because I think it is a great place to start when your wanting to buy from Vuitton and maybe have a limited budget but are still eager to have a piece from this iconic brand or even if your looking at getting a practical item that will serve you well rather than diving into buying a handbag. If your keen on a smaller luxury item then continue reading.

To really understand the world of luxury in particular Louis Vuitton, you’ve really got to know the language and most importantly the abbreviations. The main one is ‘SLG’ which stands for Small Leather Goods which is a category of Louis Vuitton’s products that is ever going with it featuring some of the most desirable items and ones that are at the entry level for beginners wanting to get a taste for Vuitton.

Small leather goods are a category of Louis Vuitton which includes some beautiful pieces where each item carries the same outstanding craftsmanship like their handbags and travel cases. I think when people are looking into purchasing their first item they usually head straight to the wallets, card holders or phone cases. They can be some of the cheaper items and if you don’t have the biggest budget to splurge on a £1,000 handbag then these items can be your first option for entering the luxury community.

Now don’t get me wrong some of the SLG’s are iconic for any Vuitton collector and they can round up their collection as well as being everyday items. Starting off with Wallets, Louis Vuitton offer several different models in multiple canvas: Monogram and Damier and in some exotic leathers and colours. If your wanting a wallet you want to get the style right, they offer different size ones depending on how much you want to carry. A classic wallet is the Sarah, it’s an envelope style wallet with the exterior coming in a selection of materials including Monogram canvas and Monogram Vernis which is a shiny leather. It’s a classic design with it featuring a variety of pockets and credit card slots making it an everyday item. This is currently being sold for £445.00 in the Monogram canvas (price varies depending on material) and in my opinion I think the price is justifiable because it’s a classic item that is an essential because it will last you a very good time.

From my experience when I was looking into buying a Louis Vuitton wallet I was immediately attracted to the Josephine, its simple yet classic style and its colourful interior really stood out as being a timeless wallet that would last a very long time. What I loved about the Josephine was its interior, I went with the Monogram canvas ( to match my bags) which came in with two interior options: Rose Ballerine or Fuchsia. I opted with the Rose Ballerine, its a lovely light pink shade which works perfectly with the Monogram and adds a girly twist to a very classic canvas. The inside of the wallet is fitted with four card slots with a larger compartment at the back and then a zipper compartment at the back. it is the perfect size for fitting all your essentials and its shape means it fits easily into any handbag.

The size of this is one of the largest but in comparison to the Alma BB ( picture above) it fits in perfectly leaving enough room in the bag for your other items.  So if you're looking at purchasing a wallet to fit plenty of cards and hold some money then I think this is a perfect one to pick and is a great item to start off your collection with because you cant live without a wallet so you know that your going to get a lot of wear out of this one. this item like many of their larger goods you can have it hot stamped with you initials,  this is a great way to personalise your item and give it a special touch. just note that if you do have this item hot stamped like any other Louis Vuitton item it does reduce its value on the resell market unless you are able to sell it to someone with the same initials or someone who isn't bothered by the initials. but if you know its going to be an item in your collection forever then hot stamping is a great idea.  It is currently being sold for £315.000 so is one of the cheaper wallets but still is value for money in quality and craftsmanship.

However, you might want to op for something more compact which is understandable because the Sarah wallet is quite large and doesn’t always fit into every bag. So, if you are one for wearing smaller bags then I suggest opting for the Victorine wallet which is sold in the same materials. Although it is smaller in comparison to some of the other models it still can hold as many of your essentials as a long wallet. The Victorine wallet retails at £345.00 for the Monogram canvas (price varies depending on material) and is a reasonable price for such an item because it really is a staple and will fit into all your bags which will make you get the most value for money.

I hope that I have helped any of you who are looking into purchasing from the SLG collection, make sure your do plenty of research to get the item right.
