Celine lost its accent and Michael took Versace. My thoughts on this month in fashion.
Celine lost its accent and Michael took Versace. This Spring/Summer
2019 fashion month wasn't just about the collections but offered us enough
drama to fuel this coming season. Here is my summary of all the recent drama in
the fashion industry.

Celine's new designer Hedi Slimane brought Saint to Celine but in
a manner that the previous work of Phoebe Philo was destroyed and the legacy of
the brand went with it. Silmane showcased her first collection for the brand at
Paris fashion week but it created a heated discussion amongst the fashion
world. The 96-piece collection- which consisted of rock-and-roll mini skirts and
skin-tight,skimpy dresses with a striking resemblance to his previous work at
Saint Laurent. The downfall of Slimane is that he stuck to his vision of such
clothing that worked for Saint Laurent but can't be brought to Celine, making
Celine the uglier and less fashionable sister. Another issue that arose was
that the show lacked in a diverse range of models, casted were only a handful
of non-white models and almost all of them were super-slim. In fact out of 96
models gracing the runway only nine of which were women of colour.
Fashion is now a big business and these large conglomerates are
being formed to branch designers together to increase the industry. In
the last month Michael Kors secured the deal to buy Versace for $2.1 billion
and has taken over the last independent Italian
brands in an effort to build a rival major European conglomerates. LVMH Hennessey Louis Vuitton (Who's brands include Givenchy,Fendi,Dior among many others) and Kering (Gucci, Saint Laurent,
Balenciaga and others). With Jimmy Choo (purchased in 2017) and now Versace
under his belt, Kors will rename the company Capri Holdings Limited. A lot of
people in the industry and fans of Versace are unsure of the future of the
label under Kors' ruling, with both the brand being completely different in
their approach to fashion. Kors' brand is heavily focused on accessories
ranging from bags to shows to watches making the label a household name.
Whereas Versace is the ultimate Italian fashion house, bringing high-octane
glamour and sex appeal at very high prices. The Controversy stems from Versace,
being purchased by an American company, Versace lacks accessibility, as for
many luxury houses, makeup or accessories are the entry point but this is something
Versace lacks in. Versace produces bags and shoes but they aren't as in demand
as products at the likes of Louis Vuitton or Gucci.
